Happy are the Sad

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Matt 5:4

Paradox – “The Christian appears at his best in the heavenly places but does not fit well into the ways of the very society into which he was born. He walks on earth while seated in heaven and though born on earth he finds that after his conversion he is not at home here.” A.W. Tozer

The Christian life is often one of great paradoxes. Sunday morning, we are going to look at Matthew 5:4, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” The paradox of this beatitude is that the Christian cannot be happy unless he is first sad. To the world this seems like foolishness and sheer stupidity. The two seem contradictory – opposites of each other. Yet, for the Christian, this is a divine truth and very much a part of the message of the gospel of hope that we seek to share with the world. How can this be? What does Jesus really mean here? I will attempt to answer those questions Sunday – see you there!
