Parable of the Soils - Mark 4:1-20

Apr 13, 2025    Mike Burt

This is one of the best-known parables told by Jesus—and for us, it’s especially important because Jesus explains it Himself. Even so, we still have several questions. I’ll try to answer a few, and I’ll also be transparent: even with His explanation, we still lack full understanding.

Right off the bat, I’m going to rename this best-known parable to The Parable of the Soils, since there is a single seed and a single Sower, but four different soils with four very different outcomes. This Sunday, I’ll look at each soil—give the background of each—and make some 21st-century applications. It’s truly a rich study and well worth coming and sharing in.

One common question is: Which of the four were saved? Or others ask: Which of the four were lost? Which of the four should we be? As faithful believers, we should be sowers—skillful with the seed. We should also know that good seed may not fall on good soil. This Sunday, we’ll talk about improving the soil, as well as being faithful sowers.

Join me Sunday in Mark 4 as we rename the Parable of the Sower—The Parable of the Soils.

See you on Palm Sunday!
