New Lessons and Old Problems - Mark 2:18-22

Jesus has met the Pharisees before – but now they come complaining about His disciples.  In their week of misery fasting they observe the feast of Levi with jealousy and criticism.  This is not a confrontation about teaching or doctrine or even Mosaic traditions – this is just unhappy people envious of happy people.  Jesus takes the opportunity to compare three common day illustrations to make His point – you cannot force the new into the old with any success.  First the example of marriage celebrations – feast while the groom is in the party – fast when he leaves.  Then the visual of sewing and wineskins:  you cannot force new onto old with good outcomes.  The repaired garment will tear and the old wineskin will burst.  

Sunday I will take each of these uncommon (to us) illustrations and try to explain them in context then explain them in 21st century applications.  These are truly timeless patterns – come and hear!  I will also have a ‘bota’ for the kids to see – like the New Testament wineskin.
