What is that One Thing? - Esther 3-5

Nov 19, 2023    Mike Burt

“Our disappointments become discontents only if we disbelieve!”

Sometimes there is one thing that is so distracting we don’t see the many other things from the hand of God in our life. This was the situation with Hamman, Mordecai, and Esther. Everything seemed right in the world… then all of a sudden, out of the corner of his eye, Hamman caught a glimpse of Mordechai! And unlike all the other people he meant on the way home… Mordecai was not quaking with fear and respect! He wasn’t even bowing… in fact, He didn’t even stand up! “Why does this guy have to ruin my day!” Unwilling to show himself in public as the spoiled child that he was … he keeps himself together long enough to get home.

And when He gets home… he starts bragging! He brags about his wealth. He brags about his children. He brags about his position. And most of all he brags about the fact that He was invited to another banquet with the king and queen! But there is still that one thing – the bad apple in the barrel – the fly in the ointment – too many cooks spoil the broth – and other clichés we all know. Hamman could not ignore the satisfaction (smugness) of Mordecai – it made him unsatisfied with everything else in life.

Sunday we will walk with Hamman and visit Mordecai and listen to Esther – hopefully coming away with a much keener sense of gratitude and thankfulness. Whatever that one thing is in your life – be ready to put it on the altar – you will be happier – you should trade fun for joy!
