Palm Sunday 2019

Mike Burt

Palm Sunday – what did it mean to the disciples? What does it mean to us? The Sunday is normally a day of celebration and recognition – but in the end that is not what it really meant. The young colt, the coats in the road, the branches cut and laid in the path of Jesus – all these things speak of royalty and honor. Yet, in few days some of these same people will join the mob to condemn Jesus and turn Him over to the Romans for execution. How did this turn about happen – so quickly and so violently?
This betrayal can be summed up by verse 11 of Matthew 21 when the crowd recognized Jesus as a 'prophet' and as 'Jesus' but failed to see Him as the Messiah, Son of God. In short, this welcoming crowd turned unruly because of one simple fact – Jesus did not meet their expectation. Instead of rejoicing in the payment for sin, they were angry that Jesus was not there to make their life better under Roman rule. Jesus is ransom for sin but not to remove every daily pain or disappointment. Palm Sunday must have us seeking Him for who He came to be and receiving Him for what He came to do. I hope to see you Sunday!
