The New Covenant - Mark 14:12-26
“It is true that the Lord’s Supper is only for sinners. But within that group, it is only for repentant sinners.” Mark Dever (9 Marks)
Many things must come together for a group meal – planning is essential! Not to know where or who or how the day of supper would be exhausting for any normal host – but Jesus was not normal. Any holy day or festival for the Jewish nation was special -they had 7 each year – this one was going to change the course of worship for at least 2000 years. Jesus would gather for the fourth time with His disciples but this one was going to be unique. Not a normal Seder – not a normal Feast of Unleavened Bread. Jesus takes the common elements and gives new meaning and new significance to them. Just a bit of bread and juice but now the shadow is fulfilled and the prophecy is given about His body and His blood. For 1500 years the Jews repeated variations of the Passover of Moses leading Israel out of Egypt – in a night those reminders of God’s provision to be delivered became reminders of our Redemption. Sunday I will share what Jesus did and what He said. I will follow up my question about Judas and we can ponder more together. I want to make sure we don’t overlook the significance of the Lord’s Table and remind us that it is temporary – I am not sure whether it may change or a new celebration will be given in the Age to come – I just want make sure we know the theological shift that took place that night –
See you Sunday,
Pastor Mike
“The benefits it (the Lord’s Supper) confers, are spiritual, not physical. Its effects must be looked for in our inward man.” J.C. Ryle (Matt 26 Commentary)
