Wasted Love? - Mark 14:1-11
It was festival time – the Passover and Unleavened Bread. All Israel recalling deliverance from Egypt with Moses and quietly praying for another Moses to come on the scene. As folks gathered around Jerusalem for the celebrations – friends gathered and enjoyed time together. One of these suppers was with Mary, Martha, Lazarus, Jesus and the Disciples all invited to Simon the Leper’s house. During that meal Mary was overcome with her worship of Jesus as the Messiah. During the meal Mary slipped away and returned with a most prized possession – a seal vial of very costly perfume. Breaking the vial she anointed Jesus head to foot wiping His feet with her hair.
Mary was overcome seeing her brother raised from the dead seated, laughing, eating – very much alive! The host Simon – the leper! Pure of skin and full of love for Jesus his Healer. I can imagine the tableau – such a contradiction and such a blessing. I wonder how often we are overcome by the abundance of God’s goodness? Sunday we will peek in the windows of this supper seeing Mary’s sacrifice – hearing Jesus words – listening to the grumblings of Judas – knowing that despite this party – Jesus death is just a few days away.
See you Sunday as we share that Mary’s love was not wasted – nor was Jesus’ love for Judas!
