Power of Praise – a summer concert of psalms
Preaching the story of a psalm is not the time to give lectures on biblical history or the parallel structure of Hebrew poetry. A study of a psalm means making us feel what it is like to have our souls in peril with only faith as our comfort. The psalmists went to great lengths to make us feel as they felt, so we might experience a glimpse of God’s mercy on the other side of troubles. Some psalms tell their stories directly while other psalms are clearly written during the story.
The formula for a standard psalm is basic for most of the songs. Typically, the Psalmist trusts in God (the equilibrium). His faith is challenged by the realities of a sinful world (the upset). He learns that God is trustworthy, even through difficulty (the solution). The Psalms we will share are much the same. They come from an ancient people who experienced the same feelings, challenges and joys we feel now. As we read or sing them, their stories become ours.
God expresses in the beauty of poetry that it is not wealth or power or fame or even success He seeks. He looks for a people of broken and contrite hearts (Psa 51). This brokenness comes only from the deepest experiences of worship. The Psalms seem to capture the timeless feel of the entirety of the human experience. This lets us hear truths that will never grow old, promises that will never expire and words that will endure into heaven!
Please join us as we both examine and experience these depths during our summer Psalms series.
